Seasonal variation in Norway spruce response to inoculation with bark beetle-associated bluestain fungi one year after a severe drought

چکیده

In 2018, up to 4 million m3 Norway spruce was killed by the bark beetle Ips typographus in Sweden. The event unique for Sweden, terms of both affected volume and fact that it triggered severe drought stress, not ample availability relatively defenseless storm-felled trees. outbreak continued 2019 2020, each year with twice as many trees 2018. aim this study quantify seasonal variation potential lag-effects tree defense capacity after a stress. Inoculation beetle-associated bluestain fungus, repeated four times one-month-intervals between May August 2019, were carried out at three field sites provenances Swedish East European origin representing early late bud burst, respectively. All had experienced moderate stress site-specific correlated positively cumulative precipitation two months before inoculation. Sites two-month levels <100 mm larger necrotic lesions phloem following inoculation, an indication lower capacity. Lesion size did differ provenances, all able confine fungal infection successfully. There some differences lesion size, Skärsnäs Norberg having significantly June than May, site Lugnet large also May. Lesions generally smaller July June. cross-sectional area number traumatic resin ducts measured sapwood samples from one site, Lugnet, additional aspect defenses. produced August. This is line positive correlation duct area, indicating stronger inoculation spring induced response. more but provenances.

Characterization of the induced response of slash pine to inoculation with bark beetle vectored fungi.

Six 25- to 30-year-old slash pine, Pinus elliottii Englm. var. elliottii, trees were inoculated with Ophiostoma minus (Hedgc.) H.P. Sydow, O. ips (Rumb.) Nannf or sterile water. Two, 4 and 6 weeks after inoculation, the lengths of developing lesions and the monoterpene concentration of the necrotic tissue within each lesion were measured. Both sterile and fungal wounding resulted in the develop...

Flavan-3-ols in Norway Spruce: Biosynthesis, Accumulation, and Function in Response to Attack by the Bark Beetle-Associated Fungus

Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are common polyphenolic polymers of plants found in foliage, fruit, bark, roots, rhizomes, and seed coats that consist of flavan-3-ol units such as 2,3-trans-(+)-catechin and 2,3-cis-(–)-epicatechin. Although the biosynthesis of flavan-3-ols has been studied in angiosperms, little is known about their biosynthesis and ecological roles in gymnosperms. In this study, the g...

A common fungal associate of the spruce bark beetle metabolizes the stilbene defenses of Norway spruce.

Norway spruce (Picea abies) forests suffer periodic fatal attacks by the bark beetle Ips typographus and its fungal associate, Ceratocystis polonica. Norway spruce protects itself against fungal and bark beetle invasion by the production of terpenoid resins, but it is unclear whether resins or other defenses are effective against the fungus. We investigated stilbenes, a group of phenolic compou...

Induced Terpene Accumulation in Norway Spruce Inhibits Bark Beetle Colonization in a Dose-Dependent Manner

BACKGROUND Tree-killing bark beetles (Coleoptera, Scolytinae) are among the most economically and ecologically important forest pests in the northern hemisphere. Induction of terpenoid-based oleoresin has long been considered important in conifer defense against bark beetles, but it has been difficult to demonstrate a direct correlation between terpene levels and resistance to bark beetle colon...

Do water-limiting conditions predispose Norway spruce to bark beetle attack?

Drought is considered to enhance susceptibility of Norway spruce (Picea abies) to infestations by the Eurasian spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus, Coleoptera: Curculionidae), although empirical evidence is scarce. We studied the impact of experimentally induced drought on tree water status and constitutive resin flow, and how physiological stress affects host acceptance and resistance. We esta...
